The Bee Gees wrote the track in 1977. Initially, they recorded their own version, which was released as the B-side to their massive hit "Stayin' Alive" .

Basic tracks were started at Château d'Hérouville in France and completed at Cherokee Studios in Los Angeles.

Producer Robert Stigwood originally intended for Elliman to sing the ballad "How Deep Is Your Love" , but later decided the Bee Gees should keep that for themselves, giving Elliman the more uptempo "If I Can't Have You".
