Ensure you use enough water—most beginners don't use enough! Your brush should glide, not drag, across the paper.
Apply a light, watery layer for the base colors (often using wet-on-wet).
Using a brush with very little water and high pigment concentration on dry paper creates textured, scratchy effects.
