Vocabulary Learning Strategies (VLS) are critical for successful Foreign Language Acquisition (FLA) because lexical knowledge is often seen as the backbone of language proficiency. While grammar has historically been the focus of language instruction, contemporary research highlights that vocabulary size is a primary indicator of a learner's ability to comprehend and produce speech. Taxonomic Framework of Vocabulary Strategies
: These facilitate learning through interaction, such as asking a teacher for a translation or practicing new words with native speakers in a language exchange program . Core Strategies for Long-Term Retention
: These focus on information retrieval through imagery , word association , and grouping words into meaningful categories.
Reviewing the literature suggests that two specific strategies significantly outperform traditional rote memorization:
: This category includes direct manipulation of the language, such as guessing from context , using dictionaries, or creating word lists.
: These involve higher-level processes like planning , monitoring , and evaluating one's own learning. Successful learners often set specific goals, such as learning a set number of word families, and regularly self-test to track progress.
Researchers categorize VLS into several core dimensions to better understand how learners interact with new words:

The FLR project has been developing and providing fishery scientists with a powerful and flexible platform for quantitative fisheries science based on the R statistical language. The guiding principles of FLR are openness, through community involvement and the open source ethos, flexibility, through a design that does not constraint the user to a given paradigm, and extendibility, by the provision of tools that are ready to be personalized and adapted. The main aim is to generalize the use of good quality, open source, flexible software in all areas of quantitative fisheries research and management advice.
Development code for FLR packages is available both on Github and on R-Universe. Bugs can be reported on Github as well as suggestions for further development.
