: In a major twist, it is revealed that the LEGO world is actually a vast set in a human basement. The events are being played out by a young boy named Finn, while Lord Business represents his father, "The Man Upstairs," who wants to glue the LEGO sets into permanent, "perfect" positions.

: The story begins with a wizard named Vitruvius attempting to protect a super-weapon called the "Kragle" from the evil Lord Business. Vitruvius is defeated but prophesies that a person called "the Special" will find the "Piece of Resistance" to stop the Kragle.

: Eight years later, Emmet lives a strictly routine life in Bricksburg, following every instruction provided by Lord Business's regime. He accidentally discovers the Piece of Resistance and becomes bonded to it, leading the Master Builders—rebels who can build without instructions—to believe he is the prophesied hero.
