However, Miller had a separate distribution deal with Phonogram in Europe. The label released it internationally first, and the song immediately caught fire. It went straight to No. 1 in several countries.
Despite the song's incredibly catchy nature, Capitol Records initially hated it. They did not believe it was a hit and refused to release it as a single in the United States.
