The film is a remake of the German movie Geheimnis des blauen Zimmers (1932). Universal later remade it twice more as The Missing Guest (1938) and Murder in the Blue Room (1944).

The film stars Lionel Atwill, Paul Lukas, and Gloria Stuart, the latter of whom is well-known for her role as "Old Rose" in the 1997 film Titanic .
