The gaslight flickered low in the basement of the Galleria estate, casting long, skeletal shadows across the floorboards. Eureka sat on a rickety stool, her fingers stained with ink and grease, staring intently at the brass lantern sitting on the table before her.
Instantly, Eureka's physical senses faded, replaced by the sensory input of the puppets. She was standing in a corridor of shifting, living stone. The walls of the Galleria labyrinth were lined with pulsing blue veins of mana, and the air was thick with a heavy, sweet-smelling fog that would have melted human lungs. She poured every ounce of her remaining mana into the lantern. In the labyrinth, the Marginal Maze puppet began to glow furiously. Disregarding its own safety, it unleashed a massive torrent of destructive magic directly into the Warden's core.
With a practiced flourish of her chalk, Eureka completed the summoning circle on the cold stone floor. Light erupted from the chalk lines, and the air grew thick with the smell of ozone and old parchment. From the light emerged the puppet soldiers—marionettes crafted from wood, porcelain, and steel, brought to life by the soul's power. There was the Peer Fortress, towering and armored in iron; the Aster Crow, wielding a massive scythe; and the Marginal Maze, clutching a glowing codex.
