The group, led by a man named Stoffer, practices what they call "spassing"—publicly feigning mental or physical disabilities to provoke and discomfort "normal" people in restaurants, workplaces, and public parks.
Most members fail or refuse the challenge, but Karen takes it to its ultimate, painful conclusion. She returns to her hostile family and "spasses" during a tense dinner, leading her husband to slap her across the face.
Unlike the other members who treat "spassing" as an intellectual experiment or a prank, Karen is genuinely grieving. She eventually reveals she suffered a devastating personal tragedy—the death of her child—and fled her life just before the funeral.
