After the death of his mother, Chicago native Charlie Countryman (Shia LaBeouf) experiences a vision where she instructs him to travel to Bucharest, Romania. On the flight, he sits next to a Romanian man named Victor who dies in his sleep; Victor's spirit asks Charlie to deliver a final message and gift to his daughter, Gabi (Evan Rachel Wood).

Upon arriving, Charlie immediately falls for Gabi, a cellist, but discovers she is entangled with her violent and obsessive ex-husband, Nigel (Mads Mikkelsen), a local crime boss. Charlie is pulled into a hallucinatory underworld of the Bucharest subway and drug-fueled clubs, determined to win Gabi's heart even as Nigel’s gang threatens his life.
