Set in the mid-2000s in Harlow, Maine, the story follows (Jaeden Martell), a young boy hired to read to a reclusive, aging billionaire named John Harrigan (Donald Sutherland). Over years of reading classics together, they form a deep bond. After winning a lottery, Craig buys Harrigan an iPhone, introducing the technophobic tycoon to the "iWorld".

When Harrigan dies, a grieving Craig slips the iPhone into the billionaire’s casket before burial. He soon discovers that the connection persists; when he leaves messages or voicemails about people who have wronged him—such as a school bully or a reckless driver—he receives cryptic replies, and his "wishes" for justice result in real-world deaths.
