The character on the screen didn't move when she pressed the keys. Instead, it turned its head slowly, looking directly into the "camera"—directly at Elara. Its eyes were no longer the standard textures of the game; they were pits of endless, swirling ink. The installation was unusually fast
Panic surged. Elara reached for the power button, but her hand froze mid-air. On the screen, the other players weren't moving anymore. They were standing in a circle around her character on the deck of the frozen ship. The sky in the game turned a bruised purple, and the "Hunger" bar at the bottom of her screen began to grow—not just for her character, but a physical, gnawing ache in her own stomach.
Elara stared at the glowing screen of her laptop, the only source of warmth in her dimly lit apartment. The words blinked back at her from a forum she’d never visited before. She knew the risks of pirated software, but the game had become an obsession among her friends, and her bank account was as barren as the ice fields she was about to virtually traverse. With a hesitant click, the download began.
