: Shinra scientist Professor Hojo captures Zack and Cloud, using them for human experiments for four years. Zack eventually breaks them out and attempts to carry a catatonic, mako-poisoned Cloud back to Midgar. Just outside the city, Zack is cornered by an army of Shinra troops. He fights until his last breath to protect Cloud.

: Angeal, torn between his honor and his status as a "monster" with a single white wing, eventually forces Zack to kill him in combat. Before his death, Angeal bequeaths the iconic Buster Sword to Zack, charging him with maintaining his "dreams and honor". Zack is then promoted to SOLDIER 1st Class.
