In the mid-19th century, the legendary Édouard Cointreau noticed that the popular orange liqueurs of the time were too sweet and syrupy. He experimented with a blend of sweet and bitter orange peels to create a "drier" (or sec ) version. He claimed his version was in flavor than others, hence "Triple Sec." Ironically, Cointreau eventually dropped the name from their labels because it became a generic term used by competitors, choosing to brand themselves simply as "Cointreau" to stand apart from the crowd!
