The film follows Bobby Deerfield, a successful but egotistical race car driver. After witnessing a fatal crash involving his teammate, Bobby becomes obsessed with finding the cause of the accident, refusing to race until it is determined. While visiting an injured colleague at a Swiss medical facility, he meets Lillian Morelli, a high-spirited woman suffering from a terminal illness.
