Immediately following the events of Aliens , a fire aboard the spacecraft Sulaco causes an escape pod to crash-land on , a desolate refinery and "blast furnace" inhabited by a colony of male inmates with a "Double-Y" chromosome mutation.

Unlike the action-heavy Aliens , this film returns to the series' horror roots but with a bleaker, more spiritual tone.

Despite its mixed reception, the film was nominated for Best Visual Effects at the 65th Academy Awards.
