Originally a shogun’s retirement villa in the late 14th century, it was converted into a Zen temple. The current structure was rebuilt in 1955 after a monk burned the original down in 1950.

A three-story Zen temple, with the top two floors extensively covered in gold leaf.
(Autumn with red leaves, snowy winter, spring with green trees?)
Kinkaku-ji (Temple of the Golden Pavilion) is the popular name; its formal name is Rokuon-ji.
The pavilion was refurbished in 1987, using 20 kg of gold foil.
